IBM 100 Years Join Global Celebration of Service

IBM's Celebration of Service honors our employees, retirees, families and friends in their commitment to volunteer service. It supports their efforts with resources, a program of new and expanded grants, and the opportunity to pledge their participation in a global effort during 2011.

Volunteering resources you can use
IBM's community service initiative, On Demand Community, provides resources that make volunteering simple and effective. As part of the Celebration of Service, IBM is sharing guides to some of our volunteers' most successful activities, along with supporting materials you can use in your own community. Most resources are available in a range of languages.

Stories of service
During the Celebration of Service, IBM volunteers, in unprecedented numbers, continue to make history by sharing their time, skills and expertise at schools and community organizations worldwide.

Read the first story of success which is a compilation of volunteer activities that were conducted on IBM's Celebration of Service Day, June 15. The numbers continue to grow with more than 300,000 IBMers in 120 countries logging 2.5 million hours on over 5,000 projects. The Celebration of Service continues throughout 2011 and IBMers continue to volunteer and share stories of their successes. Read about the impact that some of the volunteers are making. Continue to check back on the website as new stories are posted monthly throughout the year.

IBM Celebration of Service Grants
This new program supports and rewards IBMers' service with grants of cash or equipment to the schools and organizations where IBMers volunteer. It expands the existing IBM Community Grants program, and adds two new grants. Catalyst Grants provide $10,000 to support projects by volunteer teams that apply their professional skills or improve their communities' sustainability. Centennial Grants fund projects that apply IBM's smarter planet strategies to community service, with 11 grants totaling nearly $1 million awarded worldwide in July.

Sharing your volunteer activities
Please consider sharing your Celebration of Service experience by using social media tools and websites. Here are three suggestions for sharing:

1. Share volunteer plans on your social profiles
Once you've pledged hours, encourage others to join the celebration or support your volunteer plans. Post a link to this IBM100 page in your profile on social networking websites such as Facebook. Share your pledge via Twitter, using the #IBM100 and #COS hashtags. Then, post a comment below about your plans.

2. Share stories and photos on social websites and IBM100
Post your volunteering story and photos on your blog, social networking site (e.g. Facebook) or microblog (e.g.Twitter), and tag your posts with #IBM100 and #COS. Then, join the conversation here at IBM100 by commenting below — describe your experience and include a link to your social media posts.

3. Share photos with the Celebration of Service
Add your volunteering photos to the Celebration of Service gallery by clicking the "Upload your photos" button and following the instructions. You can also browse pictures shared by volunteers worldwide, from the "Celebration of Service Photos" section to the left. If you'd like to submit a photo or video for consideration in an IBM video about the Celebration of Service, please email it to odcphoto@us.ibm.com and review the release form, which will need to be signed and provided if your photo or video is selected.

Service Jam: A global dialogue about service
Last October, Service Jam brought together thousands of participants from non-profit organizations, corporations, academic institutions, and government agencies in a series of online discussions on the future of service. IBM has produced a white paper summarizing its key findings and highlighting the creative ideas for social innovation that emerged. We encourage anyone interested in service to read and share the report, and use it to help innovate, design and improve service programs.

On Demand Community
The Celebration of Service builds on a model for empowering volunteers developed through On Demand Community. Launched in 2003, the program enables employees and retirees to find volunteer activities and identify skills and expertise they can contribute to a cause. In June 2010, On Demand Community passed 10 million service hours logged since inception by more than 150,000 participants. This year, we're hoping to increase this number significantly through our worldwide Celebration of Service.

Helped at Ability Building Center (ABC) in Rochester, MN to package computers that were sold to non-profit organizations for $25 a piece. The computers were 3 year old desktops donated by Mayo Clinic and IBM. I am a regular volunteer for a day program that plans activities for physically or mentally disabled. :-)

Please share your Celebration of Service experience with the world using social media. There are two easy ways to do this. First, publish your story using your own blog, social networking site (e.g. Facebook) or microblog (e.g. Twitter). Include a photo or video. Then, be sure to tag your posts using the hashtags IBM100 and COS. Next, use this commenting section to share a summary of your service activity and links to your own social media posts, if you’ve published any. For example, you might publish a post on your personal blog to tell your service story and share a photo. You tag that blog post with IBM100 and COS. Then you use this commenter section to give a brief synopsis and point people to your blog. IBMers can learn more by visiting the Social Business @ IBM site (ttp://w3.the.ibm.com/service/sbg/).

I'm proud to see the amazing work that IBMers are doing in service all over the world. It truly reflects the deep and outstanding culture of service throughout IBM. Each individual can make a difference. Be the difference you want to see in the world by pledging. I have. Will you?
